Equine Assisted Therapy
Each of our Equine Therapists brings their own unique qualities to the Equine Assisted Therapy session.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) employs horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It’s a collaborative effort between a the Psychologist together with a horse professional who work together with patients and horses to address treatment goals. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning.
The focus of EAP involves setting up ground activities that involve the horses. These activities require the patient to develop and apply certain skills. These include such skills as communication, confidence, assertiveness, creative thinking, and problem-solving. The skill development facilitates taking responsibility for one's self, increased communication, improved teamwork skills, and relationships.
EAP has been described as a powerful and effective therapeutic technique with an incredible impact on individuals, youth, and families. EAP addresses a variety of psychological and developmental needs such as behavioral issues, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, relational issues and communication needs.
Our goal is to adapt EAP techniques, with the assistance of our Equine therapists, to meet the neurocognitive needs of our patients. We do not engage in ANY RIDING activies. Suncoast Pediatric Epilepsy & Neuropsychology Specialists will be utilizing EAP only with the horses as therapist that reflect back vital information to be used by the patient. Horses can teach us a great deal about ourselves.
